_Central universities, or Union universities are established by Act of Parliament and are under the purview of the Department of Higher Education in the Union Human Resource Development Ministry. The UGC lists 42 central universities

STATE UNIVERSITIES
State universities are run by the state government of each of the states and territories of India, and are usually established by a local legislative assembly act. As of 30 November 2011, the UGC lists 285 state universities. The oldest establishment date listed by the UGC is 1857, shared by the University of Mumbai, the University of Madras and the University of Calcutta.Most State Universities are "affiliating universities" in that they administer a large number of "affiliated colleges" (many located in very small towns) that typically offer a range of undergraduate courses, but may also offer post-graduate courses.

DEEMED UNIVERSITY
Deemed university, or "Deemed-to-be-University", is a status of autonomy granted by the Department of Higher Education on the advice of the UGC, under Section 3 of the UGC Act. The UGC list from 23 June 2008 lists 130 deemed universities. According to this list, the first institute to be granted deemed university status was Indian Institute of Science which was granted this status on 12 May 1958

PRIVATE UNIVERSITY
Private universities are approved by the UGC. They can grant degrees but they are not allowed to have off-campus affiliated colleges. The UGC list of private universities from 7 June 2012 lists 112 private universities.

Kerala University was established long before the bane of Kerala. This University comes in , 1937.This University was established by Maharaja of Travancore, Sri Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma. The first Chancellor of this University was Sri Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma.
In 1957, University of Travancore would be renamed due to force Act 14 of 1957, then this University called University of Kerala. In the year of 2007, this university got awards over 100 Ph.d. This university has there other countries for many courses. This university provides courses programs in the fields of nanotechnology, Bioinformatics, Women’ Studies and many more.

UNIVERSITY OF CALICUT Thenhippalam, Malappuram District
The University of Calicut, the second university to be set up in Kerala, came into being in 1968 with the objective of developing human resources in the northern districts of Kerala by extending the reach of higher education and by promoting research in all areas of development with particular emphasis on technology and art and culture of Kerala.
The University made the beginning by taking into its fold the four postgraduate departments set up by the University of Kerala at Calicut and 54 constituent colleges spread across seven northern districts. With ‘Nirmaya Karmana Sree’ as it motto, the University has surmounted challenges to emerge as the largest residential cum affiliating University in Kerala. Its 31 post graduate departments and 304 affiliated colleges have now become a veritable light house beckoning lakhs of young men and women to benefit from higher education.
The University campus, located at Tenhipalam in Malappuram district, 24 km south of Calicut city, is the main hub of academic activities. In addition to the office of the Vice-Chancellor, the University administration, Pareeksha Bhavan, School of Distance Education, Academic Staff College, Educational Multimedia Research Centre, Computer Centre, University Library and other central support and service units, housed on the campus are 21 post graduate departments of teaching and research. These are the Departments of Arabic, Botany, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Commerce & Management Studies, Education, English, Hindi, History, Mass Communication & Journalism, Life Science, Library and Information Science, Malayalam, Mathematics, Philosophy, Physics, Physical Education, Psychology, Russian, Sanskrit, Statistics, and Zoology.

Mahathma Gandhi University(MG UNIVERSITY), Kottayam District
Mahatma Gandhi University, also known as M G University, was established on 2 October 1983 in Kottayam. Mahatma Gandhi University (formerly Gandhiji University), has been accredited (B+) by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council, India. The next visit took place on November 24 and 27, 2011. The university has 223 affiliated colleges spread over five districts in central Kerala.
The University Grants Commission of India does not believe that the names of Indian universities should be unique, so another UGC-recognized government-run Mahatma Gandhi University was established in 2007 in Andhra Pradesh and was not challenged by the older Mahatma Gandhi University. Similarly Mahatma Gandhi University (MGU) was also established through Meghalaya State legislative Act, 2010 in Meghalaya and through Uttarakhand State legislative act, 2007 in Uttarakhand.
The university is funded by the University Grants Commission and Government of Kerala. It is a member of the AIU and the ACU. Association of Commonwealth Universities represents over 480 universities from Commonwealth countries.

Academics University offers academic programmes in the fields of Gandhian Thought, International Relations and Politics, Technology, Physics, Nano Science, Disability Studies and Rehabilitation Sciences, Special Education and Rehabilitation Sciences, Rehabilitation Psychology, Behavioural Medicine and Rehabilitation, Rehabilitation Nursing, Journalism, Chemical Sciences including Polymer Chemistry, Nursing, Hospital Administration, Environmental Sciences and Disaster Management among others.

The Cochin University of Science and Technology came into being in 1971 in answer to a concerted campaign for quality postgraduate education in the state of Kerala. Kannur University was established by the Act 22 of 1996 of Kerala Legislative Assembly. The University by the name “Malabar University” had come into existence even earlier by the promulgaton of an Ordinance by the Governor of Kerala, on 9th November 1995.
The University was inaugurated on 2nd March 1996 by the Hon. Chief Minister of Kerala. The objective of the Kannur University Act 1996 is to establish in the state of Kerala a teaching, residential and affiliating University so as to provide for the development of higher education in Kasargod and Kannur revenue Districts and the Mananthavady Taluk of Wayanad District.
